About us

This website is dedicated to the memory of Tom and Mary Bewick and Noel and Daisy Eggleston, and to all the Fontburn families of the 20s, 30s and 40s that shared the tough times in a very close knit community.

Daisy possessed a box camera, which was remarkable during a period of such poverty as that shared by us all at Fontburn in the 1930s. It was she who captured the details of our childhood and our lives, and whose photographs illustrate those years. Other photographs have been donated by the Hepburn and McLennan families and relatives of the Proudlocks of Daisy Cottages and the Storeys of Roughlees. Our thanks to everyone who has contributed, not least to Managers and staff at Fontburn Waterworks, and to Northumbrian Water, for the use of archive material, and to the Secretary of the Fontburn Residents’ Association, for her support and encouragement.

Personal recollections have been given by Lilian (nee Eggleston), Jack (Hepburn), Alison (nee McLennan) and Ian, an evacuee staying with the McLennans. Much of the narrative is written in the first person, as my own contribution, along with the historical research. Any shortcomings in the text are entirely mine.
